The Effectiveness of Class Size Reduction

The author provides an overview of the research on class size. As other authors have acknowledged, Mathis notes that class size studies vary both in method and in quality. Nonetheless, Mathis argues that among the high-quality research a consensus has emerged: “Overall, the literature on class size reduction is clear and positive. The ‘overwhelming majority’ of peer-reviewed papers find it an effective strategy.”
