Ontario Has Options: Alternative fiscal paths for the 2019 budget.

Block, Sheila and Tranjan, Ricardo, April 2019 | Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives

The provincial government has argued that Ontario’s budget deficit represents an urgent fiscal and economic crisis. Their response has been significant cuts to education, health care, services to youth with autism, environmental protection and municipal infrastructure. This report uses data from the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) to argue that it is possible to continue providing services while reducing the deficit. The authors recommend two strategies for addressing the deficit. Both strategies rely on addressing Ontario’s long-standing revenue shortfalls. These alternative paths offer a stark contrast to Premier Ford’s deep cuts to essential services.
